learning to listen

Listening with Harriet Tubman

learning to listen explores the many ways there are for listening. It is explored by looking into the past, and learning from Harriet Tubman. Harriet Tubman led efforts to free enslaved people and utilized nature as a source to guide her. It is easy to assume that listening only happens with the ears, but by reading this passage, I have learned that there is more to listen to. For example, you can listen to the fire within you. By listening to the fire within you, you can continue to fight on for what you believe in.

  • listen to the earth so that you may practice self care
  • As Harriet Tubman was coming to an end in her efforst to free enslaved people, she built a home where she could focus on care for her community and herself. In building a home, she can take care of others and be taken cared off by them in return. A lesson often repeated within this book to take care of yourself as you resist.

  • listen to how the sky guides you
  • As I have mentioned before, listening comes in many different forms. One way of listening is with our eyes. Harriet Tubman looked to the north star to guide her as she moved morth. With her she took enslaved people looking for freedom.

  • listen to water as it leads you to safety
  • To be able to lead others, Harriet Tubman had to trust in the water to let her know of passages. The people following her to freedom had to trust that she would get them there even if it meant getting in the water.

  • listen to the fire within you
  • It is important to have something to guide. Listen to the fire, or the passion, within you that guides you as you push forward.
